Navarasa Nayikas: A Creative And Collaborative Exposition Of The Nine Fundamental Moods Of Classical Indian Dance
This performance was most notable for creating a cohesive artistic experience by bringing together differences – three different styles of classical Indian dance (Bharatha Natyam, Kuchupudi and Odissi), traditional Carnatic melodies with modern instruments and percussion, stories from far-apart regions of India, and most impressively, the creative minds of eleven accomplished dancers and dance teachers.

Legendary Tamil Epic Rocks Boston Stage
Vision AID, a non profit working on empowering visually challenged people, held a fundraiser featuring a classical dance ballet, "Silapadhikaram - Justice of the Anklet". The standing ovation presented by the houseful audience was a testament to its success.

Chinmaya Mission Carnatic - Hindustani Music Concert Draws Appreciative Audience
Chinmaya Mission Boston newly built auditorium designed for solo, orchestral as well as any performing arts repertoire reverberated with an evening of fine classical music on January 30th, 2010. As part of its commitment to the arts, the organizers presented an evening of Carnatic and Hindustani Music by Geetha Murali, Shuchita Rao, and 16year old Rasika Murali along with local artists.

Record Particiapation At Nrityanajali
A record 210 dancers participated in the 12 hour long Nrityanjali program held at the New England Hindu Temple for the Shivarathri celebrations. Ten competitors vied for three top spots. And the winners are..

Laasya 2010 - A Delightful Dance Experience
MIT Natya and BU Dheem hosted the First Intercollegiate Classical Dance Competition. Eight university teams presented brilliant original classical dance choreography. University of Maryland and Rutgers University won the first and second prize, respectively.

South Asian Showdown A Smashing Success
Hosted as the first ever 'South Asian Showdown' dance competition, the South Asian Nation, Inc. show at the John Hancock Hall was a smashing success. $1000 award was given in each category. Overall winner was awarded to UCLA's team Nashaa.

NE Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Competition Is A Big Success
The winners of the NE Sa Re Ga Ma Pa organized by the HIndi Manch were Shirish Nimgaonkar and Sharanya Sarkar in the adult category . The winners of the junior category were Roshni Narasimhan, Anusha Kulkarni and Selina Banerjee. Anusha Kulkarni also won the audience choice award in addition to the second prize.

Ramabhirama - A Tribute To Bhakt, Bhakti And Bhagwan
Sunanda Narayanan and her students Amritha Mangalat, Keerthana Gnanapradeepan, Tara Krishnan, Ramya Ramadurai and Anjana Mangalat gave a thematic presentation where compositions of multiple poets was used to glorify Shri Rama, Rama Bhakti (devotion) and Rama Bhaktas (devotees).

The Boston Pledge Presents Kashish In Concert: Immortal Melodies
Thank you Boston Pledge for turning an Aashiyana into a Maikhana. As the audience rose to depart, an infused member of the audience echoed “Abhi na jao chod kar, abhi yeh dil bhara nahin”.

Natya Mala - An Exposition Of Traditional Bharatanatyam
Dancers Anjana Mangalat, Apoorva Kumar, Bhavana Chalupadi, Mamtha Raj, Manasa Jayanthi, Neha Kumar, Prashanthi Sivasithambaram, Pooja Gupta, Ramya Ramadurai, Ramya Ragupathy, Sahana Srinivasan, Vithusha Thiru, Sravya Chary, Swathi Madala, Tara Krishnan and Guru Jothi Raghavan presented a lovely selection of dances under the guidance of Guru Chandrsekar. Vocalist Vishnu Kannabiran ably supported the event, which was a fundraiser to support Aasai.

Lex Spring Dhamaka Draws Appreciative Audience
Indian Americans of Lexington (IAL) hosted a musical night Lexspring Dhamaka with Mohan Subramaniam and Meena Sundaram on March 27th at the Bedford High School. Overall, the evening was filled with music and melody, from old favorites to new numbers, slow romantic ballads to foot-tapping dance numbers. The audience were totally delighted and enthralled.

The bright, beautiful evening of April 24th, 2010 was when Bollywood Blockbuster music rocked Framingham, MA! The musical concert was presented by Aaroh, as a fundraiser for Ekal Vidyalaya and Haiti earthquake victims.

Aanthirumanjanam - Dancing Through Rain And Shine
The showers on Sunday seemed like a heavenly blessing to Vinodini who danced without missing a beat through the rain at the special celebration for Nataraja. Odissi, Kathak and Bharatanatyam were performed. Many a sweet family moments with mother-daughter dancing pairs and sisters coming together for a dance made this so special.

The Lasya School of Dance in Shrewsbury, MA organized a charity fundraiser, "Lasya Shrutilaya", on June 12, 2010 for the Akshyapatra Foundation, the largest NGO-run midday-meal program in the world at the Mindess Elementary School in Ashland.

Soulful Strings – In Memoriam On 9/11
The Center of Indic Studies and Indian Student Association of University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth presented a Hindustani Classical Sitar concert entitled “Soulful strings – In Memoriam” on September 11, 2010 to mark the 9/11 anniversary with a music offering. The sitar artist was Smt. Anupama Bhagwat and she was accompanied by Pandit Samar Saha on tabla.

Aditya Venkatesh: Soaked In Bhava
Aditya Venkatesh performed for the Karnatik and Hindustani Music Circle (KHMC) on Septermber 18th, 2010. After a delightful Hindustani concert by Ms. Shuchita Rao and her students, this young artist took over for the Karnatik segment. Accompanied by Sri. KVS Vinay on the violin and Sri. Pravin Sitaram on the Mridangam, both accomplished artistes from the area, the concert was very well planned and executed.

Shabana Azmi's Broken Images Transfixes Viewers
Shabana Azmi has been thrilling audiences in her tour of the one woman, one act, one hour play “Broken Images,” written by Girish Karnard, and directed by Alyque Padamsee. Last week she was at the recently renovated Reading Memorial Auditorium for a sold-out show. Part of the proceeds were being donated to Akshay Patra, the organization working to reduce hunger in India.

On September 25, 2010 National Heritage museum was packed to witness the “Putra Poutra Bhavathu” presented by the Jayshree Bala Rajamani, the artistic director of “Bharathakalai School of Dance” along with the jazz band “Natraj”. This program was to benefit the children of “Bharatiya Samaj Seva Kendra” based in Pune, India.

The fundraiser, titled “Tridevi Samarpanam” was a splendorous display of live music and dance that focused on the three Devis - Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Parvathy. It was quite an extravaganza that involved three dance teachers, three senior musicians and over forty young and talented musicians and dancers who succeeded in creating a divine ambiance with their performances.

This program was a real treat for it show cased the beauty of a traditional margam performed by a mature dancer – hopefully this is the first of many such performances by local area dancers. My only regret, I wish many more young dancers were there to see Soumya perform; they would have been truly inspired!

On November 20th, the Bostonians had the rare opportunity to remember and pay tribute to the legendary music director Madan Mohan. In the process, they were treated to a musical feast of classic Hindi film songs of the golden era, presented by the members of Swar Veena School of Music based in Morris Plains, NJ who presented a nostalgic evening at the Thoreau School in Concord, MA.

Learnquest Baithak Forum: A Fitting Finale To 2010
Dec. 11th’s finale event of Learnquest featured an exceptional line-up: Dr. George Ruckert (sarod), Shuchita Rao (vocal), Debi Prasad Chatterji (sitar) and Sandip Ghosh (vocal). Particular mention should be made of vocalist Shuchita Rao, who offered a deep, mature Bageshri, marvelously balancing this great raag’s combination of pathos and stateliness, followed by a lively khyaal in Desh Malhar, “Kesariya baalam” bringing joyful folk appeal of Rajasthaan and ending with the famous ghazal “Ranjish hi sahi” by poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
