Sanjay Subrahmanyan - Carnatic Vocal / MITHAS Sanjay Subrahmanyan - Carnatic Vocal with Nagai Muralidharan on Violin, and Neyveli Venkatesh on Mridangam Sanjay Subrahmanyan, born on 21st January 1968, a powerful and energetic singer, is an outstanding exponent of Carnatic Music, the classical music system of Southern India. His strong and vibrant voice, rich and fertile imagination and an excellent blend of tradition and modernity has helped him win a permanent place in the hearts of music lovers all over the world. His music has an endearing quality that connects him to any audience that he performs for. Sanjay has undergone an intensive taining period of 27 years under several great musical teachers. He began by learning the violin under Shri V Lakshminarayana (better known as the father of the violin wizards L Vaidyanathan, L Subramaniam and L Shankar). He then switched to vocal music and learnt from his grand aunt Smt Rukmini Rajagopalan for a period of 10 years. A further 10 years were spent with Shri Calcutta KS Krishnamurthy one of the greatest teachers of Carnatic music in the late 20th century. Sanjay continues his quest for knowledge and gets guidance from Nadaswaram maestro Sembanarkoil SRD Vaidyanathan, even today at the height of his successful career. It is notable that Sanjay also qualified himself as a Cost and Chartered Accountant and gave it all up to pursue his passion for carnatic music. Sanjay began his concert career in 1986. He has had a vast performing experience giving concerts all over India (inclusing 20+ concerts in the annual Chennai music festival in December) and in 20 different countries around the globe. Sanjay was the first Carnatic Vocal artiste to perform twice at the prestigious Theatre De La Ville, Paris, and was also the sole representative of the Carnatic music tradition at the La Marde Musicas festival at Cartagena, Spain. Sanjay founded Sangeetham.com - a website dedicated to promoting Carnatic music on the internet in 1998, and exclusively records and releases many thematic and live concert cds for Charsur Digital workstation (CDW) a premier recording label specialising in Carnatic music. Sanjay was the subject of an 85 minute documentary film titled "Aaraar Aasaippadar" (Desired Melody) - by Prasanna Ramaswamy which was premiered at the Friday Features November Fest conducted by the Indian National daily, The Hindu. The film was also screened at an international film festival in Munich, Germany in June 2007. Nagai Muralidharan hails from a family of gifted musicians. With nearly 35 years of concert experience, Shri Muralidharan today ranks among the top Carnatic violin artistes. He had his initial training from his mother Smt Komalavalli and later under Vidwan Shri RS Gopalakrishnan. Shri Muralidharan over the years has developed a unique original style of violin technique that is ideally suited to bring out the best values of Carnatic music. His speciality is his ability to lift the overall quality of the concert and the performance by his sensitive accompaniment and inspirational solo versions. Nagai Muralidharan has accompanied almost all the doyens of Carnatic music like Semmangudi, Dr Balamuralikrishna, Shri KVN, Maharajapuram Santhanam & Flute mastroes Mali as well as Dr Ramani. He has been on many concert tours abroad and has been visiting North America from 1982. Shri Muralidharan served on the staff of All India Radio Trichy for 26 years. He was awarded the "Kalaimamani" title by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Shri Neyveli B.Venkatesh (http://www.neyvelivenkatesh.com) is one of the current stars of Mrudangam in India. He is most sought after and has a rich experiencee of playing concerts for more than 25 years. He first learnt from his father Shri Balaraman. He later learnt from Shri Ramanathapuram MN Kandaswamy Pillai one of the foremost disciples of the legendary Palani Subramaniya Pillai. Venkatesh also had some training from Tavil vidwan Shri PP Venkatesan. Neyveli Venkatesh is both adept at the Khanjira and the Mrudangam. Shri Venkatesh’s mrudangam playing has the salient features of the Pudukottai bhani and he brings his won individual touches to get a well rounded effect. His style of accompaniment brings a lot of colour and energy to the music and lifts the overall level of a concert. Shri Venkatesh has a carved a special place for himself with international audiences especially in Europe where he performs regularly both as a soloist and an accompanist in many important global and world music festivals. He has received several awards and titles.
