Origins - Shirish Korde BMV's closing concert of the 2011-2012 Season, Origins, celebrates the diverse cultural and musical heritages of four of today's most accomplished chamber music composers. Carnatic soprano Deepti Navaratna (whom listeners might remember from BMV's 2010 production of Shirish Korde's opera Phoolan Devi: The Bandit Queen) and traditional Indian musicians join the ensemble Korde's new song cycle KA. Israeli composer Eitan Steinberg's Two Grandfathers Sing artfully combines the musical traditions of Steinberg's Hasidic Ashkenazi heritage with those of his wife's Turkish Sephardic heritage. Latin American rhythms pervade Peruvian composer Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann's Mecanismos. Boston microtonal composer Ezra Sims draws on the choral traditions of his native South for Landscapes, a set of five microtonal miniatures commissioned by BMV in 2008.
