Concert of Ragas in North India & Afghanistan.. Ken Zuckerman, sarod, Homayun Sakhi Afghan rubâb, and Salar Nader, tabla are providing a rare opportunity to experience the rarely-heard tradition within raga, jugalbandi. North Indian raga is typically performed by a solo vocalist or instrumentalist accompanied by the tabla - and backed by a drone instrument, the tanbura. But the jugalbandi (literally, entwined twins) features duets between two soloists, taking the form of a playful competition. The concert will be built around a jugalbandi that brings together acclaimed Ken Zuckerman, master sarod player with the virtuosic artistry of Homayun Sakhi, widely acknowledged as the greatest Afghan rubâb player of his generation. After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and banned all forms of musical performance, Sakhi left his native Kabul and eventually settled in the vibrant Afghan émigré community of Fremont, CA. There he met another young Afghan émigré musician, Salar Nader, a disciple of the great tabla master Zakir Hussein...
