Abstract
The Silk Road was a web of cross-cultural contacts that influenced civilizations along Central and Southern Eurasia's dynamic overland and maritime trade networks. This presentation will emphasize connections and interactions with attention to South Asia's prominent role as a nexus of cultural and economic exchanges. Evidence for these encounters and contacts will be drawn from the family of languages grounded within the Sanskrit tradition, the flow and influence of religions across the Silk Road network, and the connections from the time of Alexander to India's Mughal Dynasty.
Speaker bio: Dr. Kalivas is a Professor History at Middlesex Community College, in Bedford, MA. His interests are in the nature of interactions between civilizations from ancient to modern times. His current work focuses on understanding contemporary tensions with their historical settings.
