Through the Artist’s Lens: Exploration of the Photographic Works of Atul Bhalla

The river Yamuna in India is both life source and holy site, yet as a result of careless urban development, it is also heavily polluted. This gallery talk, given in conjunction with the installation I Was Not Waving but Drowning, will consider Bhalla’s artistic process and thematic concerns with water. These focus on the shifting value of water within urban communities, and in particular, the Yamuna’s dichotomous role in contemporary India.
This series considers objects from more than one point of view. The informal talks, many of them by Harvard Art Museums curators, conservators, and educators and Harvard University faculty members, are designed to stimulate thinking about works of art and to encourage participants to explore their own ways of seeing.
