The Prosody of the Rg Veda and the Recitation of the Mantras
Lecture The composition of the Vedas is analyzed with the help of the six vedanga texts, which help us to appreciate the depth, intensity, beauty, scope, and power of the mantras. Chhandas (prosody) is one of the vedangas. Correct metrical recitation enhances the inspirational narrative in the composition both through rhythm and tonality. A detailed discussion of the meters in the Rgveda based upon the method of Pingala from the Agni Purana will be presented. In this discussion, the versification principles of the seven primary meters will be elucidated with their technical framework and representative hymns. The presentation will reflect on the culture of the people at the time as reflected in the hymns.
