Indian Kathak Dancing Youth and Family Workshop Experience the exquisitely dynamic North Indian classical dance, Kathak. This enchanting tradition dates back over 2000 years to Kathakas, the wandering bards and minstrels, who performed mythological stories before village audiences in India. Dancers wear rows of small, brass bells on each ankle and use rhythmic recitation, dynamic footwork, and improvisation to depict stories from Hindu epics as well as themes from Persian and Urdu poetry. Gretchen Hayden and her youth performers from Chhandika will lead children and adults alike along a path of exploration through kathak footwork, movements, intricate rhythms, clapping patterns, hand gestures, and dramatic story-telling expressions. Come prepared to dance from the tips of your eyebrows to the tips of your (barefoot) toes! Date: 07/11/2009 Location: Springstep, 98 George P.
