Barnam Brothers - Duet on Drums NEW RHYTHMS OF INDIA DUET ON DRUMS BY BARMAN BROTHERS and a Sarod Recital by Atish Mukhopadhyay accompanied on Tabla by Nishikant Sonwalkar and on Esraj by Dipankar Deshmukh Sree Modhusudan and Gopal Barman inspiration came as early as the age of four from their father Late Barendra Mohan Barman who established their foundation as rhythm artist on two popular percussion instruments of Indian Classical Music, Tabla and Sreekhole. Barman brothers displayed amazing dexterity in the art forms and could hold the audience spellbound from their tender age. Gopal Barman, the younger of the two specialized on the intricacies of the Sreekhole from Prof Sanatan Saha of Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, while Modhusudan chose the more popular percussion Tabla under the guidance the maestro Pandit Shankar Ghosh. The music produced by both the Barman brothers is a novel Jugalbandi (duet) of the Indian percussion instruments. The barman brothers soon made their mark in the forefront of Indian Classical Music. Madhu received the prestigious National Scholarship in 1986-88 from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India for his remarkable maestry of the Tabla. Both of them received honorary title of Sangeet Visharad by the Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh. In 1989 Barman brothers performed in Japan with the Music of Drums conducted by their Guru Pandit Shankar Ghosh. In 1990 the audience of England and Walse experienced the magic performance of Barman brothers. In 1995 they visited England and Belgium on BBC performance tour. In 2001 they participated in World Music Festival in Spain. They provided background rhythmic music for several Bangali Films and films from Bollywood. Perfornces of the Barman brothers received tributes like 'pioneer of a unique Jugalbandi' from the local daily news paper such as The Hindustan Times, vibrating tabla-Khole Jugalbandi from The Statesman.
