Manthan - A Shyam Benegal Film / MFA Manthan by Shyam Benegal (1976, 133 min.). Set amongst the milieu of Gujarat's deteriorating dairy industry, Manthan is a tale of dairy farmers uniting in order to gain access to their fare share of proceeds from corporate milk-processing giants whom they supply milk to. An inspirational film from India's art house pioneer Shyam Benegal, Manthan was financed by 500,000 dairy farmers from Gujarat, each of whom contributed Rs. 2 ($0.04) towards the film's budget. Upon its release the farmers flocked to the theaters in truckloads, ensuring that their film was a box-office success. Manthan is one of the first films with performances by Girish Karnad, Smita Patel, Naseeruddin Shan, and Amrish Puri, who all went on to become major stars of Indian cinema.
