To liberate children from hunger and malnutrition. The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF) addresses two of the most immediate challenges India is facing: hunger and education. Founded in 2001, TAPF implements a mid-day meal (school lunch) program that currently provides free, nutritious meals to almost 800,000 children in India every day. Because the Akshaya Patra lunch is the only complete meal many of these children receive on a daily basis, it is a vital part of their health and well-being. These lunches create incentives for the children to attend school, stay in school, and provide nourishment that increases their awareness and learning skills. Akshaya Patra is the largest NGO feeding program of its kind in the world, with a goal of serving one million children by 2010 (by strengthening, expanding, and replicating this model across India). The dream of Akshaya Patra is to ensure that no child in India is denied equitable access to nutritious food, education, and quality health Date: 09/29/2007 Location: Mass.
