Sanskrit Language and the Literature
Sanskrit is the great classical language of India and is the medium of most Indian religion, literature and scholarship. Its known roots can be traced almost four thousand years back, and its relation with most European languages is still older. The ancient Vedas, together with thir sister text, the Iranian Avesta, fascinate us with their glimpse of a prehistoric intellectual world. In fields as diverse as medicine, linguistics, philosophy, and psychology, ancient Sanskrit texts are still being queried for their insights. Sanskrit remains an official language of modern India and, thanks to a lively revival movement, it is quite possible to create words and use the language in the new technological world.
Speaker bio:
Thomas Burke has had a lifelong engagement with Sanskrit, which he studied at Harvard, at the Free University of Berlin and with pandits in Kolkata and Varanasi. He taught German and French at the Varanaseya Samskrita Vishvavidyalaya, Sanskrit at Harvard, Hindi at Boston University and Pali at the Ancient Cultures Institute in Cambridge. In his retirement he is the convener of Sanskrit reading and study groups at Harvard.
