Nrityagram Dance Ensemble - Sacred Space In Hindu thought, a network of power lines that travel from north to south and west to east divide cosmic space charging the universe with the energy of the godhead. Hindu temples were built to achieve a purpose: to bring the devotee into the world of God. On its most basic symbolic level, the temple is a vastu-mandala. A mandala is a power-aura. Vastu is building. So, a vastu-mandala, is a building with an energy and a power. Odissi was a part of temple rituals, and the dance was originally constructed to reflect and create energy in much the same way as the temple architecture. The ensemble is regarded by critics as one of the foremost classical dance companies in the world and is an active ambassador of Indian culture and heritage. At a sensational debut in New York, in 1996 the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble stunned audiences with its skill and artistry. One of the most luminous dance events of the year! In addition to impressive technical expertise, they performed with a burnished grace, a selfless concentration and depth that reflected their intensive training in dance, music, literature, language and philosophy, said The New York Times. Since then they continue to stun audiences all over the world with the magic and power of their flawless dancing. The ensemble, from southern India, is renowned for its traditional and modern interpretations of the sensuous and lyrical Odissi, one of the oldest classical dance forms in India. Nrityagrams new production, Sacred Space, is directed and choreographed by Surupa Sen with live musical accompaniment.
