Future of Fabless Semiconductor Companies Topic:Future of fabless semiconductor companies Just a few years ago, VCs were pumping money into fabless semiconductor companies who promised a feature rich, faster and less power consuming chip, in a shorter amount of time than the competition. Companies such as Qualcomm and Broadcom have since delivered the promise by growing into multibillion dollar companies. However increasing mask and fabrication costs of nanometer technologies, coupled with lengthy design cycles, and decreasing chip volumes have made it harder to start a fabless semiconductor company in the past few years. Despite these hurdles, the Fabless Semiconductor Association is reporting that 129 companies raised $1.6 billion in capital in 2005. Clearly there is still plenty of funding available but the start-up profile has changed. This panel will focus on the state of the start-up activities in fabless semiconductor space and will identify trends in the market moving forward. The takeaway for the attendees will be answers to several important questions such as: What are the hurdles in starting a fabless semi company today? Is there a new business model for fabless companies? Which verticals should an entrepreneur target? wireless? consumer? networking? What is the impact of offshoring? What is the best exit strategy?
