“Annamacharya Compositions & Tirumala Rituals”

By
Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao

Annamacharya is a renowned 15th century south Indian ‘vaggeyakara’, or composer-singer –perhaps the first of his kind, even predating the Carnatic music Trinity. He was a saintly devotee of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) of Tirumala. His prolific output of sankeertanas, folk songs, books, and satakas represents an extraordinary achievement in Indian literature, music, philosophy, and devotion.

About the Speaker: Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao, a multi-faceted scholar of Telugu, Sanskrit, South Indian music and dance, is the author of 16 books (including several dance-dramas) and about 100 research papers, on the topics of religion, philosophy, music and dance. He is a prominent figure in the academic and professional South Indian music and dance circles. His multi-year research effort on Annamacharya has yielded a widely acclaimed book “Flowers at His Feet”, and a series of 4 CD’s rendered by Dr. M. BalamuraliKrishna, Dr. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy, Sri G. BalaKrishna Prasad and others, along with his analytical comments. Dr. Venugopala Rao will present a spiritual lecture-demonstration on Annamacharya sankeertanas, and focus on those that relate to the elaborate sevas (rituals) in the Tirumala temple (multimedia show will include the video of the rituals as performed in Tirumala).
