Sanjay Subramanyam has been acclaimed as one of the most serious exponents of Carnatic music of this generation. His initial training started at the age of seven under Sri V. Lakshminarayanan in vocal music and on the violin. He continued learning from Smt. Rukmini Rajagopalan for a period of eight years and finally from Calcutta Sri K.S. Krishnamurthi.
