Gurus in America - The incredible impact of India Gurus in America - The incredible impact of India's Dharmic Ambassadors: This course delves into the significant impact of Indian gurus, swamis, and yogacharyas on American spirituality, starting with Swami Vivekananda in 1893. Students will examine the backgrounds, personalities, teaching styles, and organizational methods of the most renowned and influential gurus, as well as some lesser-known figures. The course will also explore the obstacles these gurus encountered in sharing India's spiritual wisdom with a population that held vastly different beliefs, values, and histories. Course Objectives: Analyze the contributions of individual gurus who came to America. Evaluate the collective impact of these gurus on the spiritual transformation of the West. Identify the backgrounds, histories, teaching styles, and specific spiritual orientations of the most prominent gurus. Examine the segments of American society each guru reached and the areas of life they influenced. Judge how gurus were treated by Americans in different time periods and regions. Assess the challenges gurus faced in adapting traditional dharma to Western culture. Critique the gurus’ triumphs and mistakes to gain a balanced, realistic perspective.
