Waisa Bhi Hota Hai
Anything Can Happen by Shashanka Ghosh (Waisa Bhi Hota Hai, 2003, 138 min.). Released to rave reviews in India as “fresh and iconoclastic, a stand-out example of a new breed of Bollywood cinema,” and the “changing face of Indian cinema,” Anything Can Happen is a smart, stylish, and contemporary blend of Indian and Western commercial genres. Puneet (Arshad Warsi) is an advertising copywriter who happens to save a hit man’s life causing the downfall of Bombay’s top two gang lords. With slew of idiosyncratic characters and sub-plots including a smoldering female don, Puneet’s fearless cop girlfriend, a group of gung-ho Sikh rappers as well as noir, gangster, musical and comic elements, and a rich visualization of Bombay, director Shashanka Ghosh successfully creates a hip Bollywood hybrid for an MTV and Tarantino generation.
