Pushpen Dey / Sarod Recital A Hindustani Classical Sarod Recital By Shri Pushpen Dey Accompanied by Dr. Nishikant Sonwalkar on the Tabla Pushpen Dey Pushpen Dey is one of the foremost among the younger generation of sarodists in India.He has started his sarod under Sri Atanu Rakshit a senior disciple of Pandit Radhika Mohon Maitra and there after he has come under the eminent sarod maestro Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta under whom he has received extensive training. At present he is receiving guidance in vocal music from renowned vocalist of Agra gharana Pandit Kumar Prasad Mukherjee. He obtained his Bachelor of Music (Sangeet Prabhakar) in Indian Classical Music (instrumental) from the reputed Prayag Sangeet Samity of Allahabad. He is an A grade artiste of ALL INDIA RADIO and DOORDARSHAN. In keeping with his gharana (which was founded by Ustad Murad Ali Khan, his adopted son Abdulla Khan and Abdulla's son ustad Md. Amir Khan) .Pushpen's style of playing has evolved from a thorough blending of the Rabab-ang playing with Dhrupadang and Vina ang playing of the Senia Gharana. Besides being a good performer, he has an outstanding acumen for teaching. He has had the excellence in conducting lecture - demonstration and workshops in various schools and Universities such KHAIRAGARH MUSIC UNIVERSITY and MAHARSHI FOUNDATION in BHOPAL etc. He had the rare honour of being invited as a visiting fellow to the Indira Kala Sangeet Viswavidyalaya Khairagarh in the state of Madhya Pradesh in India a University exclusively devoted to music and fine arts and the only one of its kind in Asia. He has performed in many musical concerts all over India like RAMA KRISHNA MISSION, SURSAGAR SAMITY, ANIRBAN FOUNDATION, SALT LAKE MUSIC CONFERENCE and SANGEET RESEARCH ACADEMY Kolkata and also in other cities. His musical performances have been highly appreciated by noted Indian musicologists like Pandit. Dhrubatara Joshi, Dr. Jamini Ganguli and Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee. Pushpen's artistry,aesthetic sense, treatment of raga and finally his command over the instrument is highlighted in leading newspapers and periodicals like the ANANDABAZAR PATRIKA, THE STATESMAN, BARTAMAN, AAJKAL, PRATIDIN, DESH etc. Recently Mr. Dey was selected to perform in the National Program of ALL India Radio. Nishikant Sonwalkar Dr. Nishikant Sonwalkar, an accomplished tabla player of North Indian classical style, earned his Bachelors in music under the supervision of the renowned Pt. Kiran Deshpande and Pt. Sharad Khargonkar of Indore. Dr. Sonwalkar performed on All India Radio and Doordarshan TV. During the period of last several years in USA, he accompanied distinguished musicians from India, vocalista such as Firoze Dasoor, Gulam Mustafa Khan, Vinayak Torvi, Ganpati Bhatt, Gokulotsav Maharaj, Vidyadhar Vyas, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Sudha Malhotra, Sujata Bhattachrya, Tripti Mukherjee and Sumitra Guha, and instrumentalists such as Buddhadev Dasgupta, Bhaskar Chandravarkar and Jamir Ahmad Khan. Dr. Sonwalkar received his Ph.D degree from MIT and is currently the principal educational architect at MIT. He is also the founder and chairman of iDL Systems Inc in Cambridge Mass.
