Hindustani duet: Sarangi-Tabla The PCA in Westford, MA presents a North Indian classical recital featuring sarangi and tabla performances by two of New England's top artists - Suhail Khan and Amit Kavthekar. The recital will feature both sarangi and solo tabla elements. The sarangi is the most prominent bowed instrument of Hindustani music, revered for its uncanny capacity to imitate the timbre and inflections of the human voice as well as for the intensity of its emotional expression. In the words of Sir Yehudi Menuhin: “The sarangi expresses the very soul of Indian feeling and thought.†Suhail Yusuf Khan descends from a long lineage of renowned sarangi maestros. Currently a PhD student at Wesleyan, Suhail continues the family tradition and extends their legacy with concerts worldwide in both traditional and contemporary musical settings. Tabla is the most popular percussion instrument of north Indian music, both as a solo and accompanying instrument. Amit Kavthekar learned the art of tabla from legendary maestro Ustad Alla Rakha, who accompanied Ravi Shankar at both festivals. Amit performs nationally and inspires dozens of students at the New England School of Music.
