Caste in Political Movements: Experience of a Dalit activist from India
Caste in Political Movements: Experience of a Dalit activist from Telangana A talk by Dr. Sujatha Surepally Activist, and Professor at Satavana University Telangana, India Discriminatory social institutions, such as caste, continue to plague Indian society. Telangana, the newest Indian state created in 2014, represents a long and glorious tradition of grassroots people's movements. Yet caste discrimination continues to affect social life in Telangana, as demonstrated recently by the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad, capital of Telangana. The speaker, who is intimately connected with various social and political movements in Telangana, including “Justice for Rohith”, will discuss the role caste plays in political movements in India
