The Rhythm of Tradition Focusing on three geographical regions—W. Africa (Ghana: Anlo-Ewe, Dagomba), N. India, and S. India—this six-day seminar will examine principles of time and rhythm, with a focus on active participation using recitation, clapping, counting patterns, and applying ideas to non-traditional instruments. While the classes are demanding, participants need not have any prior experience with these repertoires, or even with music. Material is taught orally, and students will be provided with a 200-page book. The Institute features free public music and dance performances and a free public banquet.
