World on Stage Dance Festival Flemenco from Spain Folk Dances from Japan Bharata Natyam Dance from India Arms raised gracefully, bodies swirling in a kaleidoscope of colors, feet pounding a staccato in answer to the urgent beats of the guitar, and the contemptuous fire behind piercing eyes, this vividly expressive Flamenco dance group is directed by Andrea Del Conte. The Japanese Dancer expresses a plethora of feelings from a reverence to God, celebration of a good harvest to exorcism of evil sprits. Dancers perform with fans which, transform into the shapes that symbolize aspects of life. Directed by Momo Suzuki, these folk dancers strongly reflect the spirit and nature of each region they represent. Bharata Natyam is sheer poetry in motion. Tracing its root origins in the Natya Sastra, written by the great sage Bharata, it is a highly traditional dance form performed with the precision of almost geometrical angularity of line, skillful footwork and deeply varied facial expressions. It is the supreme vehicle of expression for the female dancer. Performed solo by Urmila Sathyanarayanan from Chennai, India with her live orchestra.
