Press Release
03/27/2014

The Akshaya Patra Foundation will be holding its 7th Annual Boston Benefit Event on March 29th. Over 400 business, non-profit, government, and philanthropic leaders from around the region are expected to attend and support the organization’s dual mission of addressing childhood hunger and malnutrition and to promote education for underserved children in India.

The event will open with a speech by U.S. Congressman Joseph Kennedy III (D-MA) of Massachusetts 4th congressional district. A strong advocate for social justice and economic opportunity, Representative Kennedy is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on Science and Technology. The Congressman and his wife, Lauren, co-founded an afterschool program for at-risk youth in Boston.

The keynote speaker for the evening will be Nina Davuluri, the winner of the 2014 Miss America Pageant. Nina Davuluri is the first Indian-American to be chosen as Miss America. She has made diversity appreciation and the promotion of STEM education the central issues of her platform as Miss America.

At the event, Miss America will be interviewed on stage by Dr. Manju Sheth of India New England’s Chai with Manju celebrity series. Manju Sheth is a Board Certified internist who works at Lahey Health with special interest in women’s health.  She has been voted among the top 50 most influential Indians in New England for three consecutive years.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is one of the largest NGO-run school meal programs in the world and serves over 1.3 million children daily in over 10,050 schools through 19 kitchens in nine states in India. The organization was recently awarded the Gold Shield for “Excellence in Financial Reporting” from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) for the fifth consecutive year and was entered into the ICAI Hall of Fame.

Last year’s sold-out benefit drew over 300 individuals and raised over $380,000. This year’s event will feature an evening of networking, entertainment, and dinner. Seating is limited, so please RSVP soon.
