Sankara Cancer Annual Report 2013

Rajesh Vaidheeswarran
12/19/2013

Before I tell you all the exciting things that have happened, I would like to share a story that Peter Singer, philosopher and ethicist at Princeton University shares with his class.

Imagine you are walking in a park, and you hear a sound nearby. You look around and see something moving in the pond nearby. Upon closer inspection, you see a child, and looking around you see no adults. Clearly, this child is in danger. What thought comes to your mind?

a. If I dive in to save this child, my expensive clothes will get spoiled?
b. This child is not my problem
- it is the problem of the adults who are responsible for it.
c. I need to save this child now and get it to safety.

If you are like the majority of people, you will have chosen (c). Peter Singer goes on to say how most people who can clearly see the solution to the above dilemma, also don't relate to equally distressing problems that are out of their sight but are deserving of their help!

Our problem is one such. We need your help.

At the HMH Trichy, SCF is establishing a cervical and breast cancer center to save lives by screening women for cancers that are easily prevented and treated with great success with early intervention at a fraction of the cost (if treatable even) of treating someone at an advanced stage. We need your help to acquire a mammography unit to start breast cancer screenings in 2014.

Achievements

SCF introduced to Rhode Island

2013 was an exciting year for SCF. We introduced the foundation and its work to Rhode Islanders in a summer fundraiser concert, featuring very talented local artists, and  was very well received.

Drs. Rajan Dewar and Shambhavi Venkataraman, both of BIDMC/Harvard, graciously fielded questions on Cervical and Breast Cancers respectively from the folks in the reception area, and we had very inspiring talks by Drs. Pankaj Bhargava (Dana-Farber) and Nicole Johnson (BIDMC) on cancer in India.

Dr. Vinitha Parkash of Yale University graciously donated two teaching microscopes for cervical cancer screening at the HMH cervical cancer lab.

Dr. Dewar announced the receipt of a grant to establish the cervical cancer lab in HMH Trichy.

Cervical Cancer Cytology Lab Established at HMH Trichy

The work to setup the lab was done in full speed, thanks to the folks at HMH Trichy and to Dr. Dewar and his gracious colleagues who visited HMH multiple times over the last few months to train the staff and volunteers at HMH to screen the cervical cancer slides.

We are happy to report on behalf of  HMH Trichy that over 700 or more slides have been successfully processed at the cytology lab at the HMH. We congratulate everyone who has been involved with the creation of the cervical cancer lab at the HMH.

Next Steps - Mammography

The HMH Trichy is preparing to take the next exciting steps into introducing breast cancer screening. SCF needs your help to help establish the breast cancer screening center at the HMH. We need to raise around $100,000 just for the unit!

Other work at the HMH

Even though the primary mission of Sankara Cancer Foundation is cancer-related, we help the HMH in other deserving medical projects as well. The HMH Trichy runs three other monthly free camps to benefit the poorest of the poor
  • Cardiac camps primarily attracts poor children with birth defects in the heart - just this year alone, over 1000 people have been screened and at least 20 patients from the screenings were immediately referred to HMH Tambaram for health surgery,
  • Artificial limbs (prosthesis) camps to help enable poor people, who have lost limbs in accidents or due to birth defects, become productive citizens of society. Over 300 people have this year have benefited from this project. That is about one person everyday getting a new shot at living a productive life!
  • Eye camps targeted towards the elderly to eliminate preventable blindness. This year, 1800 people were screened for eye defects and 800 people have been operated for cataract surgery at Sankara Eye Hospital Coimbatore.

You can help any of these! Please take a minute to donate and support these deserving causes!

We are excited to be a part of such wonderful things, and cannot do this without you. We at SCF thank you for your involvement and compassion.
