Are you concerned about the rising costs of higher education? Would you go onto to college or graduate school or have your child do so? What can be done about this? Should anything be done or is it simply ok to pay the price and get a return on your money in the years to come?
Most Asian Americans and Indian Americans highly value education and in the last 50 years, many of them have come to the shores of the United States to pursue exactly that. But since the Great Recession and the rapid changes in technology and rising expectations in Asian economies, many are wondering if things should change. Here in the Commonwealth, our 2 pillars of the economy are Education and Health Care and both these are costly. Information Technology is changing how health care and education are accessed and delivered. Both these services need to be proactive and respond to rising costs and technology to survive.
The Massachusetts Chapter of the Indian American Forum for Political Education (IAFPE) in conjunction with the India Society of Worcester (ISW) will hold a panel discussion on the increasing cost of higher education in Massachusetts on December 7, 2013. Panelists include the Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Dr. Kumble R. Subbaswamy, other educators, political leaders, parents, and visionaries. Panelists will discuss factors driving up the cost of higher education, whether or not higher education is worth this cost, and possible methods for addressing these costs. The event also recognizes India Society of Worcester's 50 years of dedicated service to the Indian American Community and will be held at the India Center, 152 Main Street, Shrewsbury, MA from 12pm-2:30pm. Cost of attendance is $40, a significant portion of which goes towards supporting the annual IAFPE Political Fellowship program, and includes lunch and networking.
Established in 1996, The IAFPE Fellowship program seeks to increase the engagement of Indian American students in the Massachusetts state political system by placing applicants in 2-3 month political fellowships with the requirement that they give back to their community through a structured community project. This is an exciting opportunity to learn more about Massachusetts state politics while simultaneously being involved in the Indian American community. Fellows will have the opportunity to meet various civic leaders from across the state, as well as learn about the legislative process and gain valuable experience to the inner workings of the MA political process.
