Sahib, Bibi aur Guru Dutt: A Musical Drama that brings the Legend Alive
The story of Guru Dutt, his films, his illustrious career with unforgettable melodies from his films

I am driving to work listening to my favorite playlist …
I arrive at my destination -
My colleagues remark on my engrossed demeanor;
I notice my unconscious yet audible humming,
I immediately become quiet but my mind is now loudly singing with Rafi’s “Chaudhvin ka Chand ho …” and Hemant Kumar’s “Jaane voh kaise log …” from Pyaasa.
How can I not?

The Golden years of Hindi cinema are squarely located in the works of Guru Dutt (GD), such as Pyaasa,  Baazi, Sahib Bib aur Ghulam, Kaagaz ke Phool, and Chaudhvin ka Chand. For the faithful, the romance with his characters, the songs from his films, and the stillness at the heart of his art is addictive. Once hooked, you don’t want to leave the special GD space which is simply authentic-yet-undefined love, half-lit corridors of one’s unspoken stories, and alluring melodies that you want to fade away in.

For the lovers of Hindi cinema, Guru Dutt and his art is being brought to life in a musical drama, called “Sahib, Bibi aur Guru Dutt”, will be staged on September 7, 2013 at 5:30pm at Keefe Technical School in Framingham, MA.

This show is produced by Dr. Meena Sundaram, who says, “Guru Dutt's life is marked by both his amazing achievements in movie-making and complex personal life. I am fascinated by his creativity and the impact and relevance of his work even today. He incorporated music and storytelling in a fascinating weave that is both thought-provoking and endearing. I hope our audience derives pleasure and appreciation for this great producer, director, actor and sensitive human being in our show Sahib Bibi aur Guru Dutt (SBAGD)."

This production is the first such attempt in New England where a star-studded cast of singers such as Sankar Gangaikondan, Dilip Acharya, Meena Sundaram, meets accomplished actors such as Ajay Jain, Dhanashree Ramachandran, Pallavi Nagesha, and Subhojit Banerjee.

Director of the show Ram Ramakrishnan, says, “it is a very rewarding experience, to present Guru Dutt’s life through his movies and his music. The cast and crew I have been working with is a very dedicated bunch of talented people. It will be a memorable show on Sep 7th.”

Stage Director Dr. Kumkum Mallik remarks, “in the cultural effervescence being witnessed in New England lately, SBGD is certain to be a landmark event. What is often missed in large Bollywood shows, will be available aplenty here - entertainment that will touch your heart - a visual story of your favorite stars of all time – Dev Anand, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Waheeda, ... Johnny Walker.”

Actress Pallavi Nagesha remarked, “I am always amazed by the shadows he created and how he uses the light to not just portray mood and emotion but the character themselves. And it’s not the different characters who are light or darkness, it’s the same character, it’s the same person who can be light and darkness; I am excited to be performing these roles.”

This show is a fund-raiser to benefit Snehalaya which works against female feticide, infanticide and rehabilitates sex workers and their children, in India. Local artists have created original paintings inspired from GD films and will be on display at the show venue. These will be part of a silent auction to raise money for the cause.

Personally, I am thrilled to be part of this musical drama. Just as songs from GD films have made a special place in people's hearts, so also this show is bound to leave a memorable fragrance for those who attend. If romantic stories, melodious songs interest you, SBGD will be the evening to come face to face with eternal love and timeless melodies.
