You are the founder of a very successful organization – Hindi Manch. What motivated you to start this organization?
While the world is changing and we are heading towards common global languages and cultures, it is also important that we understand and appreciate the beauty and value of our own languages and culture and take advantage from them. Due to my interest in music, theater and community services, I work with many organizations in the New England and am very happy to see that we have many organizations in the area to support various cultures, arts and languages. I realized that we do not have any active local organization focusing to promote and support the Hindi language in this area. I discussed the idea with the other Founding members of Hindi Manch – Mohan Dali, Pradeep Shukla, Shubha Chungi and Chaitanya Godsay (vice-president) and with their support started Hindi Manch in January 2010.
What are the core initiatives of Hindi Manch?
Hindi Manch is a non-profit (501-C-3) organization to bring people who know Hindi or who want to know Hindi together through cultural, social and educational programs and activities and to propagate Hindi language and culture among the future generations. This organization is not related to any caste, religion, region or area and welcomes everyone in the organization. Here the word Hindi is equivalent to ‘Hindi and similar languages and dialects' like Urdu, Bhojpuri, Brij, and Hindi that we speak in various states etc.
With this objective we do our regular meetings and get-togethers and host a variety of events to bring people together. We keep Hindi as the mode of communication for all these activities and events so that people can enjoy the richness of the language and culture and can use these opportunities to introduce them to the next generation. We have hosted more than 15 successful events in the area in the last 3 years like Hindi Manch SaReGaMaPa, Ek Haseen Shaam Hasne-Hasaane Ke Naam, Baal-Yuva Manch, Chitrahaar and various Hindi plays. The idea is get people involved with the language, which is why we encourage local artistes to perform in these events. With the dedicated team of Hindi Manch and support from more than 2500 people who are involved with Hindi Manch, these events and activities have received appreciation at various places. I am very happy to say that with this great objective in mind and an outstanding team working hard on them, Hindi Manch is progressing well on a path to success.
You published your first book ‘Mirchi-Cola’ last year and helped with the direction as well for the play based on the book. Could you tell us about that experience?
I am fortunate to have creative, inspiring and supporting people around me who gave me the strength and the motivation to write the book. The direction under the guidance of Shri Mohan Dali for the play was a memorable experience. The book and play were well received in the US and India. We have done two shows of Mirchi-Cola in the Boston area, and the next show is planned in Philadelphia with more shows under discussion.
You are much sought after for your stand-up comedy. Why did you get interested in this art form? Any pointers for up and coming stand-up comedians?
Theater has been my one of the biggest hobbies since childhood. Due to organizing activities, I do not get a chance to play roles in Hindi Manch plays. During stand-up comedy routines in a way I do solo acting performance, which satisfies the theater artiste within me. I am still a beginner so not sure if I can advise people but one thing I learned is that to make other people enjoy our performance, we need to enjoy that as well.
You work as a DJ at many events. What is the secret to becoming a successful DJ?
Like all other professional activities the secret of good DJing also is to ‘know your customer’. I play what they want to hear and make them dance to their favorite music.. It is a great experience to learn during DJing about the crowd, do experiments and reach to the level when you know exactly what they want.
You are at the center of many community activities, while being very successful at your work and also being a father to a wonderful son. How do you maintain a balance amongst your various activities?
There are many forces behind, but key are 1) I have encouraging, inspiring and outstanding friends and mentors. When I look at their achievements I feel that I have a long way to go which drives me to work harder 2) I am privileged to have incredible family support, blessed to have such loving mother and father; also, nothing can be done without the support of the boss at home – my wife. 3) I love all three – my family, my work and my community/social activities which gives me the strength to balance and work on these activities.

Any special message for our readers ?
First of all I am grateful to Lokvani for giving me this opportunity. Lokvani has been one of the strongest tools we have in the new England area for spreading word for good causes to the community. As the readers are mostly from the New England area, my message or request to them would be that the Indian community in the New England area is going through a transition phase where the community is getting bigger and stronger. It is very important that we create harmony, work together, recognize the goodness and strength of our culture and community and take benefit from them. In this way we will not only support our culture and country from where we came, but we will also add great value to the country where we live.
