Press Release 07/16/2013
Uttarakhand Flood Relief Sustainment Appeal B eginning June 16th, Uttarakhand suffered a massive cloud burst disaster that has killed thousands of people, left many thousands of families homeless and umpteen numbers of children orphaned. As the initial response work of evacuating stranded people, helping the injured and running relief camps begins to wind down over the next few weeks, we see a picture of despair in the locals who are now left with washed away or damaged houses, inundated agricultural fields and destroyed businesses obliterating any means of their livelihood. While the government deals with major issues such as rebuilding infrastructure, the common man in the villages and small towns is left to fend for himself. Sewa International and its collaborator Uttaranchal Daivee Apada Peedit Sahayata Samiti (UDAPSS) have been there for the initial relief work and WILL BE THERE TO HELP THE UTTARAKHANDIS ON A SUSTAINED BASIS TO GET THEIR LIVES BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. As part of the sustainment effort, Sewa has planned a number of initiatives including the following: - Distribute a ‘Home Kit’ to families affected by this disaster. Each kit is estimated to cost $250 (or 15,000 Rupees). It will contain a pressure-cooker, a frying pan, blankets, stove, kerosene, utensils, clothing, raw food items (rice, wheat flour-aata, dhal-lentils cooking oil and basic spices), soap etc.
- Running health camps and immediate medical care. Estimated $100 for medicines for 10 victim visits.
- Provide immediate counselling and psychological trauma relief. Estimated $250 for 100 victim visits.
During relief efforts 5,000 volunteers served tirelessly in different areas. They operated 15 centers providing food, medical aid, rescue assistance, transportation to safe places, and manning helplines for relatives of affected pilgrims. Sewa International & UDAPSS volunteers assisted Indian Army and Indo-Tibet Border force personnel in rescue operations and provided the personnel with food and shelter.
