A few weeks ago, we received an invitation from Raj Melville, Executive Director of the Deshpande Foundation to join a Facebook group titled “Women of Influenceâ€. The name was powerful and both of us felt honored to be included in the group that included women that we much admire. We asked Raj as to what he meant by the term “Women of Influenceâ€.
“I believe we have among us a group of women that are quiet role models and leaders. They are women who influence and inspire their friends and neighbors, their peers and their larger community through action and words. Age is no barrier. They are young professionals and veteran leaders. They come from all walks of life - from passionate homemakers to dedicated professionals. Their common characteristic is that they provide an example to those around them through thought, word and deed. Too often they are not recognized enough for what they give back to society. We need to celebrate these strong women, highlight their accomplishments and, as importantly, support them as they serve as coaches and mentors to future generations. We need to build a strong network of inspired and inspiring women who can influence the next generation of women leaders. You all need to come together to make this happen!†said Raj.
We at Lokvani felt that “Women of Influence†would be an apt title for a column to celebrate and highlight the accomplishments of some very special South Asian women. We hope you will enjoy knowing them through our pages as much as we do.
We inaugurate the column with Geeta Aiyer, Chief Strategist for investment products at Boston Common Asset Management.
If you know of a woman who would be a fit for this column, please send an email to info@lokvani.com.
