Yin and Yang of Art with artist Priti Lathia of Westford, MA

Splashes of colorful compositions were spread all over her wall. Priti’s paintings, full of vibrant colors and bold compositions, had turned her house into garden in full bloom! Priti greeted me smilingly, and explained that she used her home as her studio, dividing time between paintings and teaching art classes. She also enjoys experimenting in the kitchen with food from a variety of cultures. I had an enchanting conversation with Priti Lathia and her journey as an artist and then some more…

How will you describe you journey in Art?—“I had taken some art lessons as a kid but never thought that it will shape my career one day. I even took some dance lessons. I worked as a dietician till 8 years ago and dabbled with many volunteer activities including teaching at Shishu Bharti and as President of Gurjar Association. Then I thought of taking some art classes at Middlesex Community School.”

That was her turning point.  Her teacher asked her to teach a class after looking at a couple of her assignments. For the first time, Priti had the courage to see a future in art-- and confidence that she is actually an original and authentic artist. She started practicing art and has not looked back since. Once the word was out that she is an excellent artist and a teacher, friends and neighbors brought their kids to learn from her. Over time, she has helped several kids with their art portfolio for colleges and other activities related to art.

For last several years, Priti has been teaching art to a large number of kids three days a week at St. Mark’s Church in Westford – September to June. In addition, she also teaches art at her home twice every week and offers private lessons. She has routinely participated in several group exhibitions.

Is any family member interested in art?  Priti proudly called her 16-year old son to share his art portfolio. He recently completed an AP Course in Art at Westford Academy, scoring a perfect 5, and has also won state level awards.  Her older son recently bought a professional camera has started taking photography lessons, inspired by his visits to art museums.  Her husband, an engineer by profession, helps with setting up her art exhibitions and is the designated photographer at each of her selling Rolex Watches events.

The watch itself is a reference 6239 Daytona (steel bezel, pump pushers) with the black-on-creme, three-color exotic dial that we now call a "Paul Newman" dial because of best rolex watches. The watch dates to 1968, and was a gift to Newman from his wife, Joanne Woodward. The back is engraved with the words "Drive Carefully Me" and the inscription is still fully visible and crisp on the caseback today. According to Nell Newman, her father wore this watch all the time for the 15 or so years that he had it, even using it to time laps at Lime Rock Park, before he eventually gave it to Cox.

Is there is any medium you have not yet explored? Priti said, “I have worked and explored all mediums including oil, watercolor and acrylic, and would like to explore monochromatic paintings to see how that works for me.”

Priti likes to experiment and is quick to discard a new work that does not measure up to her aesthetic tastes. She often finds new ideas and support from other artists she meets at her several art groups. The one she is especially fond of is the Wednesday morning Breakfast Club in Nashua.

Can you explain the concept of Notan Design in your art? “Currently I am working on creating attractive, abstract shapes that form a harmonious composition and a design backdrop for my paintings. The key to a successful composition is the underlying value/shape harmony, which I call the Notan design about Best Swiss Rolex Watches. For example, when you look at the Chinese symbol of yin-yang, you will notice that the black shape has a white dot and the white shape has an identical black dot. The shape, color value and placement of these create harmony in the viewer’s mind."

Clearly, Priti’s works represent such a harmonious balance of composition, colors and emotions that I found completely captivating. As an interviewer, I was also struck by her ability to explain abstract artistic ideas in simple words. An ideal combination of talent and communication – no wonder she is so popular with her ever-increasing body of students.

I’ll encourage the readers to take time to see one of Priti’s upcoming shows.  Her events during the month of October include the following – The Breakfast Club Show at the Chelmsford Public Library
The Travel Show at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts
And the Beaver Brook Fall Art Show.
