North South Foundation (NSF) held the regional spelling bee and vocabulary contests on April 6th at MIT, Cambridge. Mostly MA residents and some RI residents attended the event.
There were a total of 70 Contestants. MIT Sangam and AID Boston cosponsored the contests. Indian Society of Worcester and India Delight Restaurant, Quincy, MA sponsored prizes and $5 Barnes and Noble gift certificates for all participants. Mr. Pradeep Sharma, President of ISW distributed the prizes.
The competitions were judged by Harris Thamby, Anshul Sood, Anju Singh and Rekha Gavani. Renu Singh, Kiran Pendri and Seema Kumar were pronouncers.
Winners:
Junior Spelling Bee: Saloni Jani (1st); Vishruth Reddy (2nd); Priyatham Vennapusa (3rd); Akshat Shekhar (3rd); Maya Jay (3rd); Neha Malrani (3rd); Mukta Joshi (Best Youngest)
Junior Vocabulary: Suhas Rao (1st); Ankit Gupta (2nd)
Senior Spelling Bee: Shreya Divatia (1st); Suhas Rao (2nd); Ramesh Govindan (3rd); Mallika Govindan (Best Youngest)
Senior Vocabulary: Sowmya Varada (1st)
North South Foundation (NSF) Manchester NH Chapter, and the India Association of New Hampshire (IANH) held the 2003 Regional Spelling Bee and Vocabulary contests for children of the New Hampshire Indian community on Saturday March 22 at the New Hampshire Community Technical College, Manchester. Forty contestants from grades one through seven participated in the event. Kumon Learning Center, Robo Tech, Kiwani’s Club, Barnes and Noble, and Kumar Tutors sponsored the prizes.
Dr. Suresh Mathur, Dr. Mary Terkoski, Dr. Tej Dhakar, Dr. Ravi Pandit, and Mrs. Dianne Lyons were the judges for the contests. Sid Patnam and Seema Kumar pronounced the words.
Vaibhav Shrishail (1st), Anjana Mangalat (2nd), Sanya Shah (3rd), and Poorvi Thigale (Best Youngest) won the Junior Spelling Bee. Meghna Chandra (1st), Amritha Mangalat (2nd), and Mayank Dubey (3rd) won the Junior Vocabulary contest. Amritha Mangalat (1st), Pratheek Kalyanapu (2nd), Meghna Chandra (2nd), Pranathi Kaki (2nd), Asish Andhavarapu (2nd), and Anjuvarshini Balaji (Best Youngest) won the Senior Spelling Bee. Teja Gandi was the sole winner in the Senior Vocabulary contest. Selected winners will represent NH in the finals.
Dr. Padma Mathur awarded Barnes and Noble gift certificates to all participants along with the certificate of participation from NSF. Prizes and trophies for the winners will be awarded at the IANH Spring Festival in May 2003.
