Scinitillating Kuchipudi Dance Ballet To Benefit AIF

07/11/2012

About the ballet

Sri Kuchipudi Natyalaya is proud to present "Tripaadi Ganga", a Kuchipudi repertoire, in association with AIF.  This drama, composed by the illustrious Guru Sri Pasumarthy Ramalinga Sastry, uses the legends of the sacred river Ganges (personified as Ganga) to illustrate the three basic types of heroines or Nayikas described in Natyashastra. Join us as we take you on a dazzling journey from Ganga’s mythical birth in krita yuga to her continuing legacy in kali yuga (present).  Our groups of 18 dancers have worked hard for many days to present “Tripaadi Ganga” in all its splendor with eye capturing colors, memorable characters, and more importantly, riveting storytelling, a characteristic unique to the Kuchipudi genre.

About the choreographer

Guru Sri Pasumarthy Ramalinga Sastry is a great exponent of Dance descending from the Kuchipudi traditional families of Pasumarthy. He has gone through training in Kuchipudi dance under Guru Sri Vedantam Parvateesam, later under the tutelage of Guru Sri. Vempati Chinna Satyam, to enrich the dance form of Kuchipudi, learnt from his ancestors. Erudite and imaginative, Sri Sastry’s talents blossomed at the prestigious institution, Kalakshetra, in Chennai, India. He has also undergone training of the nuances of Nattuvangam from renowned percussionist, Guru Sri Pandanallur Srinivasan. Sri Sastry is also known for his expertise and intricate choreographies in the genres of both Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. This excellence in many traditional dance forms won him the title “Ubhaya Natya Praveena”. Sashirekha Parinayam, Gajaneeyam, and more recently Tripaadi Ganga are prominent among his compositions. He continues to impart his vast body of knowledge in the arts to his disciples as the Associate Professor of Dance at the Hyderabad Central University.
