The Boon
When an armless man, by me, was asked -
What would you do if you had arms?
Play the violin from dawn to dusk,
He said…and in that thought, he basked.
If God decides to grant you voice,
What would you do? - I asked.
The mute one pantomimed - I'd laugh, I'd sing,
I'd shout and whisper, and generally rejoice.
To a man on crutches, I posed this one -
What would your legs do, if you had them?
Skate and ski, hop, skip and jump!
Cried Nature's unfortunate son.
When the blind man heard his imaginary boon,
His eyeless eyes took on a dreamy look
But his unlimited joy only made him swoon…
Then, I asked a man of robust frame,
With strong arms, alert eyes and certainly not lame,
What do you do for a living, sir
"Make bombs!" he quipped - this nuclear scientist,
God's favored child, in a deep pleasant voice.
