New England Malayalee Association (NEMA) successfully wrapped up Drishya 2012, the annual talent competition for children, youth and adults. The finale was held on April 28, 2012 at Oak Middle School, Shrewsbury. Celebrating its second successful year, Drishya continues its commitment towards nurturing and developing intellectual, artistic and creative talents by providing a common platform for young people to showcase their skills. Drishya organizers toiled to ensure that everyone, including participants, instructors, judges and audiences have a wonderful, positive and unique experience.
Drishya in its present form as a competitive event was started in 2011, improvising NEMA’s annual talent show. It is a three-day event held at different locations, with participants hailing from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Even though Drishya involves contests for all ages, the main aim of the event is to prepare children and youth to meet challenges faced in all walks of life, whether educational, social or cultural.
The programs presented during Drishya 2012 included both competitive and non-competitive cultural events. But, the main attractions of Drishya were the competitive events. This year’s Drishya included competitions in 10 items, with three age groups ranging from 5 through 18. The 10 items were classified under 5 main categories, namely, drawing, writing, elocution, music and dance. Music and dance included both classical and non-classical items. In addition, there was photography, music and dance competition for adults. These contests were conducted strictly in accordance with the rules and regulations framed by NEMA.
More than 250 contestants participated in Drishya 2012, attracting contestants not only from the Malayalee community but also from other Indian communities in the New England area, which is a proof that the event is aimed at bringing together talents without barriers. The winners were awarded trophies or medals and certificates. In addition, all participants were awarded participation certificates. The young talents displayed splendid performances winning the hearts of judges and audiences alike. It provided a fun-filled experience for children and youth of all ages.
Drishya reflects NEMA’s belief in the importance of a well-rounded education. The main focus of the event is the cultural aspect, which reflects the spirit of unity and friendship. It gives children and parents not only the pleasure of participation, but also the satisfaction of being part of such an active community. NEMA is committed to supporting emerging talent from across New England area and is looking forward to hosting this multicultural community event every year.
