What is  the difference between embryonic stem cell and adult stem cell ? Why is this important now ?

As their name implies, embryonic stem cells come from embryos while adult stem cells are present in any living organism. In brief, embryonic stem cells (ESC) are derived from the inner cell mass of the blastula, the very early embryo. ECS are said to be pluripotent because they can become virtually any type of cell, which is obvious since from these cells will develop an entire human being. In nature, ESC are very short-lived as they only exist in the early embryo. As ESC develop and commit themselves to becoming the various cell types of the developing fetus, they gradually lose their pluripotency. When cultured in vitro, however, ESC can be maintained and can proliferate almost eternally.

Efforts to work with ESC have been limited due to profound ethical and moral considerations. Since the source of human ESC has to be human embryos, central to this issue is the main question: “When is an embryo considered a full human being?” This question is essentially a religious one, tied to the belief as to when ensoulment takes place in the human body.  Christians believe that ensoulment takes place on the day of conception, therefore using ESC implies the destruction of a human life.  In general Buddhists, Hindus and Jews, to name a few, are not opposed to ESC research, as they believe ensoulment takes place after 3-4 months of gestation.

 Adult stem cells (ASC) on the other hand are stem cells found in living organisms after birth.  Even umbilical cord stem cells are considered (ASC). They are found is many tissues such as fat tissues, skin, dental pulp, hair follicle, as well as blood and the bone marrow.  Aside from the production of blood cells, their main role in the body is to contribute to the process of tissue repair and renewal.

In brief, when a tissue is subjected to significant stress, stem cells originating from the bone marrow migrate to the tissue, proliferate and differentiate into cells of that tissue, thereby supporting the repair process. Is the future in adult stem cell research?

In this whole process, the number of stem cells circulating in the bloodstream appears to be the most important factor. When the level of circulating stem cells was measured in the bloodstream of individuals who suffered an injury, the individuals who had the largest number of stem cells on the day of their injury showed the fastest and greatest recovery. Likewise, when the number of stem cells was quantified in the bloodstream of nearly 500 individuals and their health condition was monitored for one year, the individuals with a larger number of stem cells in their blood showed a greater level of health. In other words, more stem cells circulating in the bloodstream means more stem cells available to migrate into tissues that might need assistance.
