MITHAS presents a weekend of Rama Vaidyanathan and Shujaat Khan
MITHAS presents a weekend of dance and music beginning with a dance recital by Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan on Saturday, November 12th, at 5 pm at Chinmaya Mission Boston in Andover, MA, followed by a sitar performance by Sri. Shujaat Khan on Sunday, November 13th, at 4 pm in Wong Auditorium at MIT.
Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan, one of the leading exponents of contemporary Bharatanatyam dance, is well known for her modern approach to the core principles of this ancient art form. To quote the renowned critic, the late Sri. P. V. Subramaniam (Subudu), “The great painter Maharaja Ravi Varma must have had in mind someone resembling Rama Vaidyanathan when he painted the portrait of Shakuntala. I am not exaggerating…She is a creative artiste, ever trying to explore new vistas in choreography.†(August 1998, The Statesman) Rama trained under the famous dancer Yamini Krishnamurty as well as Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan, and this Saturday’s recital promises to be a real treat for dance enthusiasts in the greater Boston area. In collaboration with MIT-Swara, Rama will also be giving a lecture on Friday evening in Killian Hall at MIT at 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. We hope that local area students of Bharatanatyam will take advantage of this educational opportunity for them to interact with this great dancer through a question and answer session.
Sri. Shujaat Khan, son of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan, represents the Imdad Khan gharana of sitar. He is known for his gayaki style of sitar playing which strives to reproduce the subtleties of the human voice. Shujaat is also famous for his exceptional vocal presentation, which he makes use of in his rendering of folk songs and poetry. He has performed both in Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. For this MITHAS concert, he will be accompanied by Hindole Majumdar on tabla.
