South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston Know Your Rights! Program Wins Outstanding Program Award
The South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston (“SABA GBâ€) is pleased to announce that its “Know Your Rights!†Program (“KYRâ€) won the 2011 Outstanding Program Award at this year’s North American South Asian Bar Association (“NASABAâ€) Annual Convention. The NASABA Convention was held from June 23rd through June 26th in Los Angeles, CA.
To fulfill SABA GB’s and NASABA’s mission of commitment to community service, SABA GB organized the KYR program to educate members of the South Asian community of their basic legal rights and strengthen their professional and personal connections. KYR is divided into classes held over two semesters. The classes cover employment discrimination, workplace safety, fair wage and hour law, unemployment compensation, family law, consumer protection, elder, immigration, criminal, bankruptcy, health and disability law, Massachusetts courts and legislative advocacy. This year’s classes were held at the Waltham Public Library and taught by faculty who hail from state and federal agencies, the judiciary, private practice and SABA GB members.
NASABA’S Outstanding Program Award is awarded to a program that best exemplifies NASABA’s mission, which includes promoting the professional development of the South Asian legal community through networking, education, advocacy and mentoring; ensuring the civil liberties of the South Asian community; serving the legal interests of the South Asian community and the community at large; and encouraging greater participation by the South Asian community in the legal profession and government.
SABA GB President, Sa'adiyah Masoud stated, "I was so very proud to accept this award on behalf of SABA GB and to be recognized by the national organization for our work on this program, SABA GB's very own access to justice initiative. I want to also personally thank SABA GB Board Member, Manisha Bhatt, for her dedication and inspiring work on this program. It is a pivotal moment for us and the beginning of many years to come."
KYR’s creation was spearheaded by SABA GB board member Manisha Bhatt, Esq., a senior attorney with the Family Law Unit of Greater Boston Legal Services. The inaugural KYR class graduated from the program on June 9th.
SABA GB is a non-profit organization and a chapter of the North American South Asian Bar Association. SABA GB strives to work with other bar associations, governmental agencies and community groups to achieve greater involvement and understanding of the American legal system by the South Asian community.
