On May 21st and 22nd Lexington Council of Arts conducted “Lexington Open Studios 2011” – An event that attracted over 60 artists to showcase their talent be it painting, jewelry, fabric or ceramics. Returning back to her passion of fine arts after taking a break for the family and raising two beautiful children, Dr. Java Joshi was the only artist of Indian origin that showcased her work during this much anticipated event.

Java’s use of bright vibrant colors and variety in themes and subjects caught attention and was much appreciated by over 200 visitors during the weekend. Java started painting since she was 13 and earned many accolades back in India exhibiting her drawings and colorful paintings. Java has a Ph.D in Drawing and Painting from Bhopal University and a Masters in Multimedia & Web Design from AIA Atlanta. This was her first exhibition in Boston area, which has now put Java in the forefront of Indian artists in Boston area.

Java is a multi-talented individual with background in theatre (drama) for 20+ years in addition to being an outstanding oil and acrylic artist. Many of Java’s paintings were based on theme’s of drama’s from across the world – some of the notable ones that received tremendous appreciation were “Three Sisters” – based on a Russian play by Anton Chekhov, “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” – based on play by German modernist playwright Bertolt Brecht.

Some of the other work that was also appreciated was her realistic landscapes like “Indian Village”, “Indian Summer” etc. Apart from her oil and acrylic paintings Java also received appreciation for capturing the details of human emotions in her pencil sketches like “Old Lady”, “Baby” etc.

We congratulate Java on a job very well done and welcome her to the Boston area artist community. Java is an inspiration to many artists of Indian origin wanting to showcase their talent in US and spread the reach of Indian art and culture across the globe.
