Harihar Subramanyam - A Science Superstar

High school junior Harihar Subramanyam  from Wachusett Regional High School, in Holden, MA has been winning awards in several awards at science competitions. His innovative Tornado Windows Phone app has been very well received.

Project : “Tornado App” – for Windows Phone 7 OS

Tornadoes are nature’s most powerful windstorms. These storms can be devastating and unpredictable. Over 900 tornadoes are known to touch down every year in the U.S. causing over 1,000 injuries/fatalities. Even with modern forecasting tools, it is impossible to accurately predict these storms. Therefore, preparation is the best way to minimize loss of life during tornadic events.

The goal of this project was to design a mobile application for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating system that could provide users with actionable information and tools which could potentially save lives. The application accomplishes this through the use of phone sensors and services, live weather data, information from the National Weather Service, and specially designed algorithms. The application was written using primarily the C# and XAML languages and the Visual Studio IDE.

“Tornado App” includes several unique features with an intuitive, minimalistic user interface that will allow users to quickly and effectively complete tasks relevant to tornado emergencies. For instance, the application finds shelters near the user’s specific location, reports storms to the user’s friends and family through the social network Facebook, and computes a plan of action based on the severity of the user’s unique situation. “Tornado App” also includes a plethora of tornado information that is easily accessible even when internet connection is not available.

The unpredictability and intensity of tornadoes makes them one of the most destructive forces of nature. With “Tornado App”, users will be able to adapt and react appropriately in almost any severe weather emergency.

He has won several awards for the app.
