03/30/2011 TyE Gala and 10K Business Plan Competitions – Finals on April 9th Do you know a high school student looking for something new and exciting? Introduce them to the TyE program! Over 30 high school students in New England received hands-on experience in becoming entrepreneurs at the TyE program (TiE Young Entrepreneurs) Class of 2010-11. This program introduces entrepreneurship and business to students improving their self confidence and developing leadership skills and capabilities. TyE is TiE-Boston’s signature program for high school students with a mission to excite young people to discover the rewards and challenges of becoming entrepreneurs and business leaders. During the program, students attend interactive discussions and workshops on Saturday mornings which are led by industry experts and entrepreneurs. This year several business luminaries spoke to the TyE students which included Nitin Nohria, Dean of HBS; Ashok Boghani, Monitor Group; Partho Ghosh, The Boston Pledge; and Elizabeth Thornton, Professor Babson College. As part of the TyE program, students participate in a 10K Business Plan competition where they pitch their business plans to VCs and leading entrepreneurs. The winning team from Boston will then participate in the TyE-Global 25K Business Plan competition to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina. This year, TyE 10K Business Plan competition and Gala will be held on April 9, 2011 at Holiday Inn Select in Woburn MA. Seven outstanding teams (Omni College Group, Photo Tagging, Illumination, Lex-Imagen, Team Brown, Knowtz, Team Alpha) will present their business plans which will span through an array of breakthrough ideas in diverse sectors. Three winning teams will be awarded cash prizes of $5K, $3K and $2K at the TyE Gala & Award Ceremony which will be held in the evening starting at 6:00 pm. We invite you to the TyE Gala on April 9th to celebrate the winners of this year’s competition. Key Highlights of the evening are: Last year at TyE Gala, students met and received inspirational lessons on entrepreneurship from Eswar Priyadarshan, CTO & Co- Founder of Quattro Wireless and Akhil Nigam, Founder & President, Mass Challenge. They also had the opportunity to meet chief guests, Jaishree Deshpande, Deshpande Foundation; Navjeet Bal, Commissioner, MA Department of Revenue who participated in the evening celebration. The TyE experience is life changing for several students, some get direction on a career path, others get help with fine tuning their college application, and some others hone their presentation skills. In all, the transformation of high school students into entrepreneurs is highly rewarding. TyE Alumni have launched several companies. For example, Mohini Srivastav and Kyle Kahveci started myskylark.com which integrates all online teenagers' activities on to one platform. Another alumnus Naman Bharadwaj, launched a robotics company, Shaqbot. In 2009, the TyE program was adopted by TiE-Global and offered to other TiE chapters. This year 8 TiE chapters are running a TyE Program. Each is holding its local TyE completion and the winner from the eight chapters will participate in the TyE-Global competition on April 30th. TyE-Boston team won the TyE Global $25K Business Plan Competition in 2010.
