Press Release 03/16/2011
Dr. Jamshed Bharucha, who has served with distinction as Provost and Senior Vice President of Tufts University since 2002, will leave Tufts at the end of this academic year to assume the presidency of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City. This is a tremendously exciting and well-deserved appointment for Dr. Bharucha, and an outstanding choice for Cooper Union.
In almost nine years at Tufts, Jamshed has touched and strengthened virtually every aspect of Tufts. He played a critical role in enhancing the intellectual profile by setting high standards for the recruitment of distinguished deans and faculty, and of exceptionally talented students. He continuously demonstrated that true excellence requires an unwavering commitment to diversity. Working with the Deans, he led the strategic planning effort that produced the priorities for Tufts highly successful Beyond Boundaries Campaign.
Jamshed enhanced the physical campus by his instrumental role in creating the wonderful Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center. Tufts would not have the new Shoemaker Boathouse but for Jamshed’s tireless fundraising efforts. Boston, Grafton and Medford/Somerville campuses have all benefitted from his advocacy for investment in Tufts physical plant and research infrastructure.
Tufts is a far more integrated university today because of Jamshed. He helped knit the schools together through his support of a variety of innovative programs including the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the Council on Graduate Education, the Graduate Competitiveness Initiative, the Summer Scholars Program, and the University Seminars. His investments in additional research support for the faculty helped to double the research volume. Particularly noteworthy were his efforts to reinvigorate neuroscience at the Medical School. Working with the International Board of Overseers, The Fletcher School, and the Institute for Global Leadership, he also strengthened Tufts' global presence.
While carrying out his administrative responsibilities at the highest possible level, Jamshed also continued to be a productive scholar, publishing widely in his field of cognitive neuroscience. He has carried on his many academic and professional activities with an engaging sense of humor that endeared him to us all.
Congratulations to Dr. Bharucha on his appointment as President of Cooper Union!
