Indian Americans in Belmont come together to celebrate Diwali!
While neighboring towns like Lexington and Newton have a large number of Indian Americans, the number in Belmont is modest in comparison. Albeit modest, the number is growing and growing fast, as more and more young families choose Belmont as their hometown.
It was with this trend in mind, and the fact that a lot of us felt the need for a community for our families, that I started Bindis in 2009. The name Bindis stands for Belmont INDIanS and of course the meaning has special significance for Indians!
This year, Bindis celebrated its second Diwali at the lovely residence of Jimmy and Jayanthi Mistry, a longtime Belmont family. While 80 people is a large number it was a cosy enough setting that allowed families to mingle and get to know each other. Several connections were made, emails were exchanged, telephone numbers were scribbled on paper napkins and Diwali turned out to be exactly what it was always meant to be - a celebration with family and friends.
Kids ranged in ages from 20s to 2 months! Some of the little children helped decorate the entrance to the Mistrys' house by drawing and coloring rangoli patterns. Others entertained the crowd with their singing. The house took on a festive Diwali look with little battery operated diyas. And of course delicious food, catered from Bollywood Cafe, completed the picture as everyone enjoyed the dinner and dessert.
