Navarasa Dance Theater is pleased to announce the US premiere of Encounter
at the Julie Thompson Theater at the Dance Complex, 536 Massachusetts Ave,
Cambridge, MA 02139 on Fri and Sat Sep 24, 25 and Oct 1, 2, 2010. Tickets: $20 and $15 (for students, seniors
and BDA members.) All shows are at 8pm. Encounter
explores the different kinds of encounters in contemporary human life:
encounter of the human soul with the divine, encounter with memory, encounter
with lover, encounter with gravity and encounter with the military. Encounter has been conceived by Aparna
Sindhoor and S. M. Raju, Choreographed by Aparna Sindhoor and Anil Natyaveda,
Directed by Aparna Sindhoor. “Encounter with military†is written for stage by
S. M. Raju based on the short story Dopdi
written by Mahasweta Devi, one of India’s most renowned writers. Sindhoor, Raju and Natyaveda
are important artists of contemporary Indian dance. They have created
innovative dance theater works with unique original movement and
vocabulary. Trained in various arts such
as Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Kalari Ppayattu, Malkhambh, Yoga, music and
theater, the choreographer and writer team has created an evening long work in Encounter that will mesmerize the
audience with its virtuosity and intensity of dance, live singing and
theater. Navarasa Dance Theater’s last
production, A Story and A Song was
hailed by critics in India and North America as “breathtaking!â€
and “tantalizing.†Navarasa
Dance Theater has performed widely around the world and was featured at Franco
Dragone’s show in Germany. They have
performed at the Lincoln Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, New Haven
Festival of Arts and Ideas, Lincoln Center, World Social Forum, New World
Theater (Amherst, MA), Teesri Duniya Theater (Montreal, Canada) and at major
Dance and Theater festivals in India. Performed
by a multi-cultural cast of Navarasa Dance Theater artists that come from
India, Boston and Singapore. Performers include: Aparna Sindhoor, Anil
Natyaveda, Smitha Radhakrishnan, Rajesh Raveendran, Raghu Narayanan, Vyvyane
Loh and Soumya Ramanathan. Music
includes scores by Isaac Thomas, Bob Marley, Neela Bhagwat and others. The
performances will run on Friday & Saturday, September 24, 25, and Friday
& Saturday, October 1, 2. All show
times are 8pm. Show running time is 90 minutes. Ticket prices are $20 for
general audience and $15 (students, seniors, artists and BDA members.) Encounter
is presented in cooperation with Cambridge Arts Council, Chahara Foundation.
