You wake up in the morning at 7 AM and your spouse leaves for work shortly after. You have all the time in the hand and no work to do. You feel bored, frustrated, and badly in need of someone who can speak your native language. You switch on the television and all you get are American channels full of soap operas and sports that you barely follow. You crave for the good old days where you used to have fun watching Indian TV channels and even make fun of the people who watch Indian serials. But times have changed and the tables have turned. If you are one of these people, you are not alone.
Thousands of people who used to work in India with busy life styles are finding it hard to be out of work due to visa issues in the US. Besides other modes of spending time such as going to the library, shopping, speaking with friends, one might find watching live internet streaming of Indian channels to be a nice getaway from the usual routine. However finding such links is hard by google searches alone for the following reasons a) the web sites are often full of viruses and have pop-up ads that just won’t close b) the links are often broken after a week and c) the quality of the stream is low.
As someone who has been in this situation I set out to find quality websites for live streaming of Indian TV channels or those that hosts regular TV serials on a daily basis. Through extensive internet search and word-of-mouth I have found a few websites that I feel are worth sharing with other fellow Indians. Being multilingual I am interested in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi programs. Here I list many of my findings some of which may be paid and others free. All these websites have worked 90% of the time for me. There have been occasions when they have not worked, especially the free ones.
First and foremost, since I was born and brought up in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, Telugu is my first preference.
Gemini TV (http://www.desicable.net/Telugu_Gemini_TV_Online.html) offers many telugu serials and movies. Other similar telugu channels include E TV (http://www.watchsuntv.com.desicable.net/Telugu_etv.htm) and MAA TV (http://www.desicable.net/Telugu_Maa_TV_Online.html). Besides these Teja TV (http://www.desicable.net/Telugu_Teja_TV.html) offers non-stop movie entertainment. There are other websites that host telugu movies such as www.saradaga.com, www.movielover.in, and www.70mmonline.com.
Second, I am interested in Tamil, this being my native language. I find live streaming of Tamil channels hard to find. However there is one paid network www.watchsuntv.com which offers many packages including Sun TV, Vijay, Kalaignar TV, and other lesser known Tamil channels. The price of these packages range from $10 - $20 per month. Tamil movies can be found in www.tamilpeek.com. The striking feature about this website is the good quality of the videos they provide for relatively new movies. Besides these many Tamil serials can be found in www.tamilmagix.com.
Last but not the least, many Hindi channels are streamed for a fee at www.watchsuntv.com. These channels include Star One, Star Plus, Star Gold, Zee Cinema among others. I also highly encourage everyone check out www.desirulez.net for a number of Hindi channels. It is definitely worth exploring.
US can become a boring place when we do not have much to do. Luckily we have the internet and many Indian programs to kill time with till we land that elusive job. "I entered the land of opportunities in Nov. 2009 and have been living in Boston with my husband since then eagerly seeking that opportunity" says Swetha.
