Ranjani Saigal 08/19/2010 ALOHA math centers are revolutionizing the way math is taught. Could you describe the ALOHA methodology? ALOHA (Abacus Learning of Higher Arithmetic) uses Abacus as a tool to develop mental arithmetic skills in young children. Initially, children use the abacus to learn arithmetic and transition to perform the arithmetic in their mind without the abacus. Could you explain what is unique about ALOHA? (or) How do you differentiate yourself from other math enrichment programs? ALOHA is a teacher-led program. It is not based on rote learning, but rather on developing superior arithmetic skills through different learning methods. We teach arithmetic using visual, listening and hands-on techniques in a small classroom setting, making it a pleasant experience for kids to learn and master math skills. When children are able to visualize, they comprehend the subject better. This helps the students to learn an abstract subject like math better. The emphasis is on whole brain development since we teach left-brain analytical skills (math) using right-brain (visualization) techniques. The focus on developing mental arithmetic skills improves concentration and attention span. What is the right age to start ALOHA? ALOHA is an ideal program for kids between the ages of 5 and 12. As significant brain development happens from birth until 12 years of age, ALOHA is structured for kids between 5 and 12. We also have a few kids around 4.5 years in the program and perform very well to the expectations. We have a junior program (5-8 years) and a senior program (8-12). The junior program can be completed in 2.5 years and the senior program in 2 years. What is the kind of commitment that is required of the child? We have one class a week for 2 hours. The kids should be present for this class. Apart from this, we provide homework which should take about 20 minutes a day for 4 days a week. How much parental involvement is required for ALOHA? This program needs minimum parental involvement. Most of the learning takes place in the classroom. Parents are not required to learn the techniques or be present during the class hours. We encourage parents to help the kids with their homework which is more of fun filled exercise because of the tools used in this method for learning. Can you share your success stories? Please visit our website www.aloha-usa.com and take a look at what parents and kids have to say about the program. People who have been through the program for at least six or more months have graded the program very high and want us to offer other programs including pre-Algebra to Calculus. What is your goal for your students? Our main goal is to make our students the best in mental arithmetic and in turn excel in their school. Any student good in mental arithmetic is bound to do well in schools because of their improved focus and concentration. With the visualization techniques we impart, their analytical and creative skills also improve to a great extent. At the end, we want them to be the best in their class and we are very confident that ALOHA can make them achieve that. I would like to quote what President Obama said recently about the status of Math and Science education in the US: "And that leadership tomorrow depends on how we educate our students today, especially in those fields that hold the promise of producing future innovations and innovatorsâ€.
