The North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA) held its 2010 Annual Conference in Boston, MA from June 24-27, 2010. The agenda was packed with breakout panels dealing with Health Care Reform, Masters Class on Islamic Finance, South Asian Women in Leadership Roles, Women and Minorities Under Islamic Law, Prosecuting and Defending Terrorism Cases, South Asians and Public Service, Banning Foreign Law Firms in India, How to Make Your Solo/Small Firm Practice Grow, Doing Well by Doing Good and many more.

The Keynote talk by Preet Bharara, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York along with the plenary breakfast and lunch sessions dealing with Supreme Court Review, Running for National Office, Morning News Hour-An Insider’s View of the White House and The Financial Bailout-An Interview with Neel Kashkari were the highlights of the conference.

“Power of your law degree gives you a degree of power that few know how to use and put to good use. In addition what counts is not how you get to a position of power but what you do there,” said Bharara in his very inspiring talk. He defines success as adherence to principles, passionate advocacy, wisdom to learn both sides of the issue and use skill and judgment.

Running for a national office is important. One must do it for the right reason and with passion, not for resume building. Be part of a campaign to see how the system works and do it because you want to talk to people,” said Manan Trivedi, Candidate for U.S. Representative, Pennsylvania’s 6th District.

The key aspects of growing your business are to gain trust and faith of your clientele, build relationships, focus on generating work and surrounding yourself with good people, said Trupti Patel of Trupti N. Patel & Associates.

In litigation, one should know when to say yes and when to say no. It is essential to do marketing, networking and using press and media effectively. Most importantly, you need to close deals, said Neil Sherring, Partner, Dakoyannis & Sherring, LLC.

Congratulation to Natahsa Varyani, the NASABA Convention Steering Committee and the SABA Greater Boston Board of Directors for their superb organization.
