Nirmala Garimella 04/27/2010 Teachers of both Hindustani and classical music, and their senior students in the New England area assemble to present ‘Nada sangamam’ a musical extravaganza on May 16th at the Chinmaya Mission which will offer Carnatic and Hindustani music lovers an evening complete with different styles, different ragas, a variety of types of performers designed to bring the best of the community to a diverse audience. According to Durga Krishnan, Director of MITHAS and a Carnatic music teacher, the event is a community effort with the support of teachers and students and will be a fund-raiser for MITHAS’s scholarships and future workshops by renowned artists. Geetha Ramamurthy, Chairperson of MITHAS is pleased with the new initiatives taken by the new board members at MITHAS, saying that their commitment to music is total and their efforts and hard work to hold these fundraisers is to be much appreciated. “These events are not easy, she said, adding “that it takes months of planning, coordination, time and dedication to bring an event of this nature. At the end of it , there is great satisfaction because here the senior students showcase their talent and are given an opportunity to play at the same platform as their teachers†The musical event is aptly named Nada Sangamam or confluence since the repertoire is wide and varied. The student’s ensemble is a unique addition says Durga Krishnan and they include traditional pieces as well as a medley which involved some creativity but the end result is pretty amazing. Surely an evening not to be missed for lovers of Indian classical music !
