The Bollywood sensation Kailash Kher held the final concert of his current US tour at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA of Friday November 13 2009. It was presented under the auspices of World Music.
Kher and his band Kailasa regaled the audience with his signature songs like Allah Ke Bande Has de, Tauba Tauba and others along with new numbers from their first international album Yatra(Nomadic Souls) which is on the acclaimed independent label Cumbancha.
Right from the start Kher was clear that he was here to bring the party to Boston and was urging the audience to dance and clap to his tunes. His voice had the power to get non-Indian members up and moving to his rhythms. There was a Asian gentleman who absolutely took the theater by storm with his unusal and dynamic moves.
Kher's journey through Bollywood started in small way with singing for jingles. His voice caught the attention of many production houses. His big break came with the song "Allah Ke Bande" from the movie Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II. The song became more famous the film and Kher catapulted into the national spotlight.
Kher formed the band Kailasa along with Paresh and Naresh Kamath who are fixtures on the Indian Pop Scene. Along with Sanket Athale on percussion, Samir Chiplunkar on the Keyboards and Karsh Kale on drums, Kailasa has created many smash hits including Teri Deewani and Tauba Tauba.Kailasa combines Kher's strong traditional folk sensibilities and lyrics invoking Sufi mystcism with Naresh and Parehs's more mordern rock , electronic and funk influences.
Kher presented a few numbers from his album yatra. The number "Guru Gantal" was powerful and I am sure will be heard in the DJ circuit.
Watching the enjoyment of the non-Indian audience at the theater it is obvious that Bollywood numbers are getting attention all over the world. Kher's voice is getting international recognition.
World music is to be congratulated on bringing such a fine performer to Boston.
