Featuring, Miss India World Wide. Her performance "a fusion of Indian classical and modern dance" starts out by balancing a pot on her head and ends by stepping onto and dancing on a plate on the floor. A similar performance "brought the house down" and helped her win the Miss India World Wide crown. About the Honoree Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author and poet. Her themes include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magic and celebrating diversity.
Chitra writes both for adults and children. Her books have been translated into 20 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian and Japanese. Two novels, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films. Her book of short stories, Arranged Marriage, won an American Book Award. She teaches Creative Writing at the University of Houston. ........................................................................................................................................
Special Performance by NATRAJ Natraj seamlessly melds the classical music of India, traditional music from West Africa, and contemporary jazz to create its own unique and infectious style. Natraj has delighted listeners throughout the US, Canada, India, and West Africa since 1987. Natraj features the raga-influenced soprano saxophone of Phil Scarff; the emotive inflections of ECM recording artist and violist Mat Maneri; the warm, nimble solidity of bassist Mike Rivard; the tabla and multipercussion mastery of Jerry Leake; and high-energy groove of drummer Bertram Lehmann.
